Potato Find!

| May 19, 2012 | 2 Replies

Yesterday, I discovered I had grown potatoes for the first time in my life! When I noticed some of the potato shoots looking droopy, I thought I would dig down and investigate.

In the episode “Rainy Day” I had planted 6 small potatoes in a pot, 3 purple, 2 golden and 1 red. I kept digging and found some more.

It was very exciting! I didn’t want to disturb the roots too much as I ran across a couple of little babies, so I stopped with this batch.

Potatoes in a pot has been the easiest thing I have tried to grow. I’m going to keep planting them! Tonight we’ll have new potatoes with cabbage slaw made from my only green cabbage. I harvested it last night after I discovered three cabbage worms on it.

I didn’t want them eating it before I could. Thanks for reading! – Kaye

Hey Kaye, It looks like you are having so much fun in your garden. I look forward everyday to see if you have posted a new picture and comment. Our garden is looking good, too. We’ve planted tomatoes, bell peppers, green beans, corn, okra, squash, and peas. We have not harvested anything yet. Your garden was planted way before ours- due to weather. April 15th is our date that we can be sure the frost is gone in TN. The one new thing we planted this year was 3 blueberry bushes. Hopefully, we’ll get blueberries next summer. I’ll let you know how we do.

  2. Mary Ellen, sounds like you’ve got all the Southern mainstays planted! Peas like cool weather here – I’m talking about sweet peas that you eat out of the pod – and I haven’t had much luck with them between powdery mildew and low yield. I’ve got to figure it out before fall because I was given some peas at One Gun Ranch to try. Even with a small yard, I’ve got my hands full. Wish I had a garden helper! Thanks for tuning in and reading. Please tell your friends! – Kaye
